Every time you plug something in or switch on a light, you are relying on your electrical system to behave safely. Residual Current Devices, or RCDs, are the last line of defence when something goes wrong. They detect faults and cut the power in a fraction of a second, protecting people from electric shock and reducing the risk of fire.
Testing them regularly is not optional. It is a legal requirement under BS 7671:2018 and applies across a wide range of property types.
What Makes RCD Testing So Important?
The problem with RCDs is that they can fail silently. There are no warning lights, no error messages and no obvious signs that something is wrong. A device that looks fine and has never caused any trouble could still fail to trip when it is needed most.
That is why routine testing by a qualified engineer matters. It is the only reliable way to confirm that your devices are functioning correctly and that your site is properly protected.
Understanding The Two Types Of Testing
A user test is something that can be done in house. Pressing the test button on the device every six to twelve months simulates a fault and checks that the RCD trips as it should. If it does not trip the device needs professional attention straight away.
An engineer test goes much further. A qualified electrician uses specialist equipment to measure trip time and response accuracy and to identify issues that a basic button test would not pick up. This should be carried out annually or in line with your risk assessment.
When To Call Us
If your RCD fails to trip during a user test, trips repeatedly without an obvious cause, or cuts power unexpectedly to parts of your building, do not ignore it. These are signs that the device needs to be assessed by a qualified engineer.
What We Provide
We carry out full RCD testing and provide clear reports that set out exactly what was found and what needs attention. We also offer complete RCD mapping, giving you a detailed record of every device on site, what it controls and which board it belongs to.
If it makes sense for your site, we can carry out RCD testing alongside EML or PAT testing to reduce the number of visits needed.
